Many programs stop supporting young people at 18, but life’s challenges do not suddenly disappear with adulthood. September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month—a time to uplift warriors, spread knowledge, and inspire action. Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 Americans, most of whom are Black or African American. With 1 in 365 Black babies born with SCD and 1 in 13 carrying the trait, awareness is vital. At The Campbell House, we honor this fight with our new “Sickle Cell Warrior” shirts, designed to spark conversations, raise visibility, and show strength in community.
Smiles, Supplies, and Support: The Campbell House Back-to-School Story
The Campbell House hosted its annual Back-to-School Book Bag Giveaway 2025, bringing hope, joy, and confidence to more than 200 children in Newark. With the support of volunteers, vendors, and generous partners, students received backpacks filled with school supplies, enjoyed face painting and concessions, and left with fresh haircuts and braids.
This year introduced a new highlight: five specialty career-path book bags - Digital Creator, HVAC, Cosmetology, Culinary, and Medical - sponsored by community members and partners who believe in supporting technical education. These bags will be awarded to West Side High School students through an essay contest, encouraging youth to pursue their chosen career paths.
At The Campbell House, we believe every child deserves to start the school year with confidence. This event was more than giving away supplies, it was about filling backpacks and hearts with hope.

"My journey began in Newark, where I faced struggles as a teen mom that could have broken me—but instead, they gave me purpose. The Campbell House was born from both heartbreak and hope, carrying the love of my grandmother, Margaret, and the legacy of my little sister by love, Kashidah. This is more than an organization—it’s my life’s calling to make sure no girl ever has to walk her journey alone."
